When the Universe Gives You a Green Thumb—and a Magazine Feature!

Did you know that Dunitz & Company is a long-time, Gold-Certified Green America Business? Because we are dedicated fair traders, Green America’s philosophies align perfectly with ours, and we are so proud to be part of this community. Over the years, they have been incredibly supportive of their business members—even including Dunitz in their holiday gift guides and "back-to-school" features. For that, we are always immensely grateful!

I’m usually on top of things whenever Dunitz lands in the press. Honestly, it is so unusual for me to miss anything written about us! But recently, I received a completely unexpected surprise. Joan from Just Creations—a wonderful fair trade store that carries our jewelry in Louisville, Kentucky—sent me a quick note. She mentioned she was thrilled to see my face inside Green American magazine.

Huh? I had totally missed it! I immediately scoured the internet for a digital link and reached out to the team at Green America, who graciously mailed me a hard copy.

A Surprise Visit from Green America
Here is the backstory: Last year, Anya Crittenton, a Senior Writer and Marketing Specialist for the Green Business Network, stopped by my home for a visit. We had the absolute best time! The primary focus of their visit was to dive into the history of Dunitz & Company and chat about my decades of working with fair trade artisans in Guatemala.

Of course, if you know me, you know I can't help but carry on about my personal passion for gardening, too. While showing them around, I eagerly pointed out my new fruiting trees and bushes, and raved about Green America's amazing initiatives. Before they left, Anya snapped a quick photo of me standing in front of my garden box, where my arugula was going to seed and my coneflowers were showing off their beauty.

Proof in Print (and a Funny Coincidence)
Fast forward almost a year later, and sure enough, that exact photo made it into the pages of Green American magazine!

The funniest part? The day I opened the magazine, I realized I was wearing the exact same shirt featured in the photo. It’s a beautiful piece from Sevya Handmade—another incredible fair trade, Green America business member run by two women I absolutely adore. They always reciprocate and share the love, so I'm thrilled to give them a nod here. I love the shirt, and honestly, I really love the photo. How often do we actually get to say we love pictures of ourselves?

Silent Nods & Full-Circle Moments
As it turns out, the universe wasn't done surprising me. While hunting for the magazine link, I stumbled upon another Green America piece that quoted me from a while back, which I had completely missed until this past week. Yes, that means twice I completely missed Green America giving me a nod! This older piece didn't have a photo, which is probably why it slipped under my radar.

During the Covid lockdown, I had created a blog post featuring museums offering virtual tours. Green America actually picked it up and wrote about my post, silently highlighting Dunitz to their network. It just goes to show how quietly and consistently Green America roots for their business members. (And yes, I immediately took a screenshot and added it to our website's press page!).

Dig In: Climate Victory Gardens
That brings me back to the program I raved about during Anya's visit: Green America's incredible Climate Victory Gardens program. It is a grassroots initiative that empowers individuals and communities to grow their own food while actively combating climate change through healthy soil. They host phenomenal educational webinars featuring experts in gardening, cooking, and food preservation.

I am so inspired by this movement that when I took a class through the Los Angeles Master Gardener Program last year, I encouraged my entire cohort to sign up.

If you have even a passing interest in gardening, I highly encourage you to register your plot or check out the Climate Victory Gardens YouTube Channel to catch up on their webinars. It’s a beautiful way to plant roots for a better planet. -ND
